Tekst z okładki austriackiej.

why “inner silence” for a title? leszek explains: “inner silence is the imperative state of mind and soul one needs to make music, music is born out of silence, just like man. one must care for and know how to live with silence”.

these words are perhaps the key to leszek’s personality.

born in cracow, he studied music at the age of 15, and later became incessantly active in local bands, upon listening to leszek play, the Viennese “barrelhouse jazz-band” invited him to austria in 1965. subsquently, he was awarded with a scholarship to study at the jazz institute in GRAZ. it was there that he met eje thelin, a leading european trombonist, in thelin he found more than a teacher, his impact over a period of three years of hard work together, aided the development of that leszek zadlo we know today: an individual and mature artist whose musical awarness finds a captive audience wherever he plays, on returning to Vienna after three years “seclusion” in graz he was engaged by the austrian radio & tv/orf/big band, art farmer, jimmy woode, fritz pauer, hans Salomon, and a host of other well known musicians shared many hours of musical companionship with leszek, at the same time he became a member of the erich kleinschuster sextet, a group that emerged from the larger orf big band, apart from being a sideman or soloist, he was featured in several festivals, workshops, and recording sessions in west germany, hungary, switzerland, etc…

“i’ve played with nearly all european musicians and some americans”, says leszek. “however, i was thinking more and more about forming my own group, when i met peter ponger/pianist/my idea began to take shape, he had toured europe and recorded a lot. with the advent of dick sells/electric bass/, my confidence grew even more, english born dick studied musicology and spent some time in india, where he became interested in hindu music, philosophy and yoga, our drummer, gerhard herrmann – i know him for six years – and i played with him in the “josephinum” jazz place some years before i came to graz. he’s a brilliant and experienced musician, we met with american born trombone player butch kellem in the orf big band, i’m glad to say that we found a common language in no time at all. musically i want the group to have complete freedom of expression, what i compose are merely sketches of suggestions, ninety percent of what we have recorded is spontaneous and it is no longer important wether it is jazz or some other music, it is an international art to which everybody contributes whatever he feels and knows best”.

one year has passed and leszek zadlo’s popularity has outgrown the esotheric circles of the Viennese jazz scene to which he was involuntarily limited, seeking understanding for “his” music.

now, this album will certainly enlarge and consolidate his reputation as a true musician abroad.

Jan Byrczek
